In 2005, a group of pet food experts and nutritionists came together to start Freshpet. Our combined pet industry experience spans over hundreds of years, but more importantly, we are all dog owners and dog lovers!

We believe that a healthy diet for people includes fresh, wholesome, natural foods that are minimally processed and thought that same principle should apply to our pets. To do this would require a shift in how pet food is made and perhaps more importantly, how pet owners would feed their pets.

So, we sat down and developed a recipe for what we thought the ideal diet would be for dogs. It looked very different than what was on the market. Much like a meal you would expect to prepare for your family, our recipe consisted of real meats, fresh vegetables, brown rice and other ingredients we were familiar with and could pronounce.

What we didn't include were fillers, chemicals, and by-products. This very human-like recipe was great but it would require two things. A unique manufacturing process, and because of the natural ingredients, it would require refrigeration from our facility to your pet's food bowl. Special manufacturing facilities would have to be built that could gently cook the ingredients in small batches. We would then have to find retailers that believed in the product enough to add a refrigerated case to the pet food aisle.

Every step of the way was ground-breaking and did not follow the normal path of developing a new line of pet food. But that's what Freshpet™ is all about. Not doing what's easy, but doing what's best. for your pet. And that is why we developed Freshpet™ Select - for the dogs.yours and ours.
